Hay figuras del deporte que inspiran por lo que hacen en el campo, duela o alberca, y sobre todo, por aquello que hacen “detrás de cámaras”. San Diego Wave FC es noticia en el futbol femenil profesional internacional. Apenas el 17 de septiembre pasado, el equipo estrenó como su casa el Snapdragon Stadium en la ciudad de San Diego, California, Estados Unidos, y rompió el récord de asistencia en la NSWL (Liga Nacional Femenil de Futbol) con 32 mil personas, cuando enfrentó al Angel City FC. La cifra en sí misma es noticia, pero cobra especial relevancia precisamente porque 10 días antes, el 6 de septiembre, los equipos de fútbol masculino y femenino de EE. UU. firmaron acuerdos de igualdad salarial. La firma se dio en el contexto del encuentro amistoso en el que la selección estadounidense venció 2-1 a Nigeria. Alex Morgan, fue titular.

Es precisamente en el San Diego Wave FC donde Alex Morgan juega y anota goles, uno tras otro. La delantera es una de las capitanas del seleccionado norteamericano y fuerte promotora de la campaña y demanda por la igualdad salarial en el futbol del país vecino. Morgan, tras el partido frente a Nigeria, en el marco de la firma del acuerdo, lució una playera de Estados Unidos con la leyenda “Equal Pay” y el número 22. Morgan es medallista olímpica y campeona del mundo con Estados Unidos.

Tardaron seis años en arreglarse. Fue un camino sinuoso. Una eternidad para las mujeres. De acuerdo con el portal de US Soccer, el acuerdo corre hasta 2028 y asegura que la compensación económica será idéntica (masculina y femenil) por participación en competiciones incluyendo la Copa Mundial de la FIFA y repartición de ganancias comerciales, además “mejoran los términos no económicos incluyendo la salud y seguridad de los jugadores, privacidad de datos y la necesidad de balancear responsabilidades para club y nación”[1]. Por otro lado, el acuerdo incluye el pago atrasado del premio de $24 millones USD por ganar la Copa Mundial de la FIFA en Francia 2019.

San Diego Wave FC derrotó 1 a 0 a Angel City FC. No es casualidad que se haya roto el récord de asistencia cuando se estrenó el Sanpdragon Stadium entre San Diego Wave FC y Angel City FC, equipo de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, que tiene entre sus socias más destacas a la actriz Natalie Portman, la cantante Christina Aguilera, las ex futbolistas Mia Hamm y Aby Wambach, y la actriz Eva Longoria. Son figuras internacionales en diferentes ámbitos, y también luchan con ideales que den igualdad a mujeres y hombres en lo salarial, político, social, cultural.

En la conferencia de prensa postpartido en el Snapdragon Stadium, Alex Morgan, mencionó que el récord es una muestra de que el futbol femenil en Estados Unidos ha crecido muchísimo, aunque su desarrollo, tanto a nivel futbolístico como en los estadios, mercadotecnia y otros rubros, tomó alrededor de 10 años. Consciente del esfuerzo de Morgan por lograr la paridad salarial y su figura como ejemplo a seguir especialmente entre los niños, le pregunté cuál es el mensaje más importante que tiene para los jóvenes, niñas y niños; ella respondió: “No hay secreto para el éxito, todo es trabajo duro, tener confianza y tener un buen sistema de soporte, ya sea familia, amigos o un entrenador; un buen sistema de soporte que te ayude a lidiar con la subidas y bajadas del deporte, ser fuerte durante los momentos más difíciles”.

El tema cobra especial relevancia ante los rotundos fracasos de los combinados mexicanos femeniles en torneos internacionales de futbol contrapuestos con el éxito que está teniendo la Liga MX Femenil, de la mano de jugadoras como Charlyn Corral, Alicia Cervantes o Katty Martínez entre otras. Alex Morgan es una figura a seguir en el campo de futbol pero también es a nivel cultural. Ella, Megan Rapinoe y muchas más, consiguieron la paridad salarial demostrando que venden, que juegan bien –campeonas del mundo y casi imbatibles–, y, sobre todo, que merecen exactamente el mismo trato que su similar masculino. Esto va a permear tarde o temprano en el futbol internacional y si México quiere aspirar a tener más mujeres practicando el deporte, en mejores condiciones, entonces los dueños tendrán que mejorar los recursos tanto a nivel de clubes como en selecciones nacionales.

De acuerdo con una nota de ESPN de mayo del 2022, apenas América, Tigres y Monterrey tienen algunas jugadoras con sueldos por encima de los 100 mil pesos… el salario base general de la liga es de $4500 pesos. Habrá que recordar que apenas en septiembre de 2021, la COFECE anunció que 17 clubes de la Liga MX Femenil fueron multados por imponer tope salarial ($2000 pesos a las jugadoras mayores de 23 años) y segmentar y restringir el mercado de fichajes.

La ola de equidad salarial ya comenzó y viene con fuerza.

It took six years to settle. It was a winding road. An eternity for women. According to the US Soccer website, the agreement runs until 2028 and ensures that economic compensation will be identical (men’s and women’s) for participation in competitions including the FIFA World Cup and sharing of commercial profits, in addition to “improving non-economic terms including player health and safety, data privacy, and the need to balance club and national responsibilities.” Furthermore, the agreement includes the retroactive payment of the $24 million USD prize for winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France 2019.

San Diego Wave FC defeated Angel City FC 1-0. It’s no coincidence that the attendance record was broken when Snapdragon Stadium debuted between San Diego Wave FC and Angel City FC, a team from Los Angeles that counts among its most prominent partners actress Natalie Portman, singer Christina Aguilera, former footballers Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach, and actress Eva Longoria. These are international figures in different fields, and they also fight with ideals that seek equality for women and men in terms of salary, politics, social, and cultural aspects.

In the post-match press conference at Snapdragon Stadium, Alex Morgan mentioned that the record is proof that women’s football in the United States has grown immensely, although its development, both at a footballing level and in stadiums, marketing, and other areas, took around 10 years. Aware of Morgan’s effort to achieve salary parity and her role as an example to follow, especially among children, I asked her what the most important message she has for young people, girls and boys; she replied: “There is no secret to success, it’s all hard work, having confidence and having a good support system, be it family, friends or a coach; a good support system that helps you deal with the ups and downs of the sport, being strong during the toughest moments.”

The issue gains special relevance given the resounding failures of the Mexican women’s national teams in international football tournaments, contrasted with the success that the Liga MX Femenil is having, led by players like Charlyn Corral, Alicia Cervantes, or Katty Martínez, among others. Alex Morgan is a figure to follow on the football pitch but also at a cultural level. She, Megan Rapinoe, and many more achieved salary parity by demonstrating that they sell, that they play well – world champions and almost unbeatable – and, above all, that they deserve exactly the same treatment as their male counterparts. This will sooner or later permeate international football, and if Mexico wants to aspire to have more women playing the sport, in better conditions, then the owners will have to improve resources both at club level and in national teams.

According to an ESPN note from May 2022, only América, Tigres, and Monterrey have some players with salaries above 100,000 pesos… the general base salary of the league is 4,500 pesos. It should be remembered that just in September 2021, COFECE announced that 17 Liga MX Femenil clubs were fined for imposing a salary cap (2,000 pesos for players over 23 years old) and segmenting and restricting the transfer market.

The wave of salary equity has already begun and is coming on strong.
